about

12/9/2022

It's been almost five years since the last Antilock release came out. So much has changed since then. And yet, when I sat down with Cam last night to work on a few songs, it felt like just yesterday we were in that basement on the corner of Barton and Milbank in Rochester, jamming out in the time we had before class.

The feeling of making music with a friend is truly unmatched, and I am so excited to see where this takes us now. It's not gonna sound like anything we've released before, and it's different from my solo stuff as well. We're still in the early stages, but goddamn, it feels good to be doing this shit again.

Love always,
Cal

Mixing what we've been working on. Goddamn I am excited to put this out.

The album is done. That's a great thing to be able to say. To be honest, for a few years there, I wasn't sure I'd get the chance to do this. When I left Rochester, the band was one of the things I was saddest to leave behind. Cam and I had a connection that was rare to find, but between school and jobs, we never really had time to sit down and record what we'd been working on. It was truly a wonderful moment when Cam told me he was moving to Brooklyn, and it filled me with this feeling of potential and excitement like nothing else.

In hindsight, I'm so glad we had that break of a few years, so I could practice recording enough to really do these songs justice.

A few times in your artistic life, you may be lucky enough to meet a friend who feels like you’ve known them your whole life. Who gets you on not just a personal level, but also on a creative level. Who is perfect at “yes, and”-ing your weirdest creative impulses in a way that just makes sense.

For me, that’s Cam.

Following my move to Brooklyn after college, our band Antilock went on hiatus. But I knew that the band wasn’t breaking up. We had too much of a kinship to ever consider that. No, we just silently realized that we had to put it on ice for a while. Life went on, I kept recording music, but we still kept in touch. Cam was still one of the first people I’d send new demos to, and he sent stuff he was working on to me. We even dabbled in trying the long-distance band thing a few times, sending files back and forth. But nothing really solidified the same way it did when we were in the same room, making an unholy racket.

Then, in late 2021, I got some of the best news of my life. Cam was moving to Brooklyn.

A few weeks after he moved, we had our first practice in almost three years. I played a few demos I had been working on, and asked if he had any ideas for it. Cam silently flipped a few pedals on from his board as I plugged his guitar in, and he tried a few things out.

It sounded fucking angelic.

After a few loops had been recorded, I pressed stop and looked up at Cam. He was grinning ear to ear like a kid in a candy store, and I’m sure I must have looked almost deranged with joy!

The rest of the year, we regularly practiced, making song, after song, after song. Before we knew it, we had an album done. It didn’t sound like anything we’d done before. Some songs had the same intensity and fuzz of our college live shows, but we’d discovered something else, too. Something subtler. Something dreamy. Something that just felt right.

We’re finally ready, and incredibly eager to share these songs with you. They’re about queer joy, grief, love, anger, and more than anything, the revolutionary nature of finding and holding on to hope in a world where hopelessness is a valuable commodity. Remember, we can only make change if we believe that a better future is possible.

Thanks for coming along for the ride. We really hope you like this one.
